Hello, my dear, spooky colleagues & parents!
This short post will share some ideas on how you can use the Halloween: building spooky sentences in your classroom or home to practice sight words and get ready for word-formation!
Why is word-formation important step in literacy?
Teaching the mechanisms of word-formation is an important area worthy of effort and investigation. Word formation
Y. Tahaineh, The Awareness of the English Word-formation Mechanisms is a Necessity to Make an Autonomous L2 Learner in EFL Context, Journal of Language Teaching and Research, Vol. 3, No. 6, pp
mechanisms may be defined as a set of processes for the creation of new words on the basis of existing ones. Thus,
apart from borrowing from other languages, the vocabulary stock of a language is formed by means of what is usually
known as word-formation rules and, particularly, of word-formation mechanisms, such as coinage, derivation,
compounding, clipping, blending, conversion, backformation, abbreviation, etc.
What are the rules of this game?
After cutting out and laminating the letters, put them into one bag.
Let the children sort out the letter by making 1 word for every page. Every page also has a photo that will help them with the default word. Continue by making all of the 3-letter words. When you completely exhaust all of the options, continue to the column with the 4 and 5 letters.
How can you extend the game with more activities?
- Spell out all of the words;
- Focus on phonics;
- Tell your partner to close their eyes and describe the word to them to make them guess what it is;
- Separate into teams and start a competition – time yourself to make it harder;
- Use a dry-erase marker to write the words on the dry erase pockets and practice your handwriting;
- Make your own word-formation game!

PLEASE DO NOT PRINT THE FIRST PAGES OF THE WORKSHEETS
TRY TO USE DRY ERASE POCKETS SO THAT YOU DON’T WASTE PAPER AND THAT YOU CAN REUSE THE MATERIALS AGAIN. Thank you!
