This short post will share some ideas on how you can use the Halloween let’s make wicked sentences – word order- cut and stick worksheets in your classroom or home to promote early literacy!
Why is word order important?
Word order in English is important because it can change the spirit, meaning, or fluency of a sentence. Basically, it’s considered an SVO language, like such Romance languages as Spanish, French, Italian, and Romanian, meaning that generally, sentences follow the Subject-Verb-Object pattern.

Here are some steps to help you get ready for word formation!
Step 1
Cut out the jumbled words in strips first. Let a child do it to practice fine motor skills!
Step 2
Cut them up completely and practice your little fingers!
Step 3
Sort them in separate pouches into sentences.
Step 4
Use the templates and the words you cut out and start making fun Halloween sentences and practicing word order!
Glue the words onto the given lines to further practice your little fingers!
🎃 Extension activities for the Halloween word order game
To continue playing with the worksheets, you can try these activities:
- Instead of just making sentences on a specific page and practicing word order in one task, mix ALL of the words and make funny, but grammatically correct sentences;
- Hide the words and play a game where children have to find the words;
- Identify word forms (adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns, etc.);
- Play with word formation and make new words;
- Spell out the words;
- Make antonyms and create opposite sentences;
- Change tenses;
- Make your own cut and paste word formation game!
